The Electricity Sector


Market participants


In 2018, 1 682 players were operating in the electricity market of Lithuania: 1 621 of them were producers of electricity, 1 entity operating the transmission network by the proprietary right, 6 entities operating the distribution networks, 5 entities performing the public supply function. Moreover, in 2018 there were 49 independent suppliers operating in the electricity market, which held the issued licenses/permits, and 23 of them were active. 

​​Quantities


In 2018 the electricity consumption in Lithuania equaled 13.2 TWh. Lithuania imports the major part of the consumed electricity – in 2018 the imported electricity quantity was 12.4 TWh, export was 2.8 TWh.

Lithuania produces 30,8 percent of the demanded electricity quantity – in 2016 the quantity of produced electricity equaled 3,97 TWh (where 50,9 percent – the electricity quantity produced in the power plants using the renewable energy resources (RES), 34,8 percent – produced from fossil fuel, 14,3 percent – the electricity quantity produced in Kruonis Hydro Pumped Storage Power Plant).

The biggest part of the electricity produced and imported in Lithuania is consumed by industrial customers, and approx. 26.7 percent of the consumed electricity is assigned to household customers.

​Revenues


The revenues earned by the transmission system operator Litgrid AB from the transmission system operation were as high as EUR 165.7 million. In 2018, the operating income of the distribution network operator AB „Energijos skirstymo operatorius“, which holds the biggest share of the distribution market, equaled EUR 201.9 million, the revenues earned from the public supply activity – EUR 3.6 million.

​Investments


In 2018, the investments in the infrastructure of the electricity transmission and distribution networks totaled EUR 224.5 million: EUR 18.9 million were the investments in the transmission network, EUR 205.6 million – in the distribution network.
